Blogging safety

Blogging has swept the Internet by storm in recent years. You will see blogs almost everywhere already; but what is blogging anyway? Through blogs, people are able to publish their own content on the Internet anytime. People write about anything that is of interest to them and let the whole world know what they think about certain topics. Examples of sites that have blogs and encourage user-generated content, are MySpace, Bebo, Blogger and BlogSpot, to name a few. There are many more sites on the Internet that offer blogging services, with no technical knowledge required.

Blogging is very useful for self expression and communication. People publish their thoughts through blogging, and often use them as an alternative to traditional diary writing. Many people make friends through blogging. You can also comment on other people’s blogs and let other people comment on your blogs too. Blogging sounds fun but you have to be careful when blogging because there are a lot of nasty people out there that can take advantage of the information that you post on blogs. You should make it a point to always be safe when blogging because you never know when someone bad out there will take advantage of you and the information you publish.

When you post a blog, make sure that you do not post any confidential information that may harm you or your family now and in the future. If you post contact details and home addresses then you might end up with unwanted visitors. If you are going to post a picture then you should upload it and assume everyone in the world will see it. If the picture is not suitable to be shown in this way, consider whether you really should post it online. You should also be careful when you respond to other people’s blogs because you never know if they will take your response lightly or seriously. If you post a comment that discriminates against a group of people then you might end up being the target of such a group of people later on. Be careful when making comments; think before you post.

Blogs are a great way to communicate but you always have to keep things in check. Make sure that you are using blogs for the right purpose. You can express yourself, make friends, and make constructive comments. You should not use blogs to pose as someone else, upload offensive content, and discriminate against other people. If you are familiar with blogs then you should educate those who are new to them, and encourage netiquette. If you do not know a lot about blogs then you should ask reputable people, parents and teachers on how to use them appropriately.
