The Internet is being used nowadays by most people primarily for communication. One of the ways people use to communicate is with online chatting or chatrooms. Through chatting, people can type in their thoughts, opinions, and ideas. Other people can respond to you through chat too. Once you type in something, you can expect an instant reply in real time. You can communicate as if you were on the phone although in this context, you will be typing what you say and you will be reading what the other person has to say.
There are a lot of chat programs out there. To name a few, there are Yahoo Messenger, MSN, Jabber and Google Chat. There are many people in the world who chat. As long as there is an Internet connection, someone can chat. You can chat with someone in Brazil even if you are located in Sweden. You can chat with someone in Puerto Rico even if you are in Alaska. You can even chat while you are riding an airplane from country to country. It is very enjoyable to chat. You will be able to address the need for human communication through chat. It is almost impossible to be lonely when you are always chatting over the Internet. The Internet has made many things possible. With all these possibilities, one must take into account the limitations or precautions involved.
When you chat, you have to make sure that you do not give away any important information. Keep your home address, telephone numbers, and confidential information to yourself. You have to be careful with whom you chat with because you never know if the other person you are chatting with is really the person you think he or she is. You do not want an unknown person to suddenly stalk you. Some chat programs have file sending capabilities. You have to be aware of the files you accept because sometimes they may have viruses in it. You definitely do not want a virus to ruin your computer, right? If you are a minor then you might need adult supervision when you are chatting. Even if you are an adult and you are not familiar with chatting, you should still ask help from experienced chatters. You never know when someone will take advantage of you. If you are already familiar with chatting then you should guide the other people on how to chat properly. You will be able to help keep people safe and sound this way.
